Zone Unit Measure Finder v1.36(10/13/91)
714 Area Code
INTRODUCTION
Zone Unit Measure Finder is a simple utility to
determine how much a telephone call will cost you.
Although there are many other utilities that do this
same function I feel that I have made some significant
improvements. This program is based on a program named
ZUM Locator by Jay Heyl. After using his program, I was
very impressed by the layout of the information, but I
felt a need to have some additional features. Some
features that I have added include:
1. The ability to print the information for one,
some, or all the numbers you have entered.
2. The ability to save your phone number as part of
the program configuration.
3. The ability to read a list of numbers and generate a
report by zone, to the monitor, to a file, or to a
printer.
USE OF THE PROGRAM
To start the program simply type "ZUMFIND". If this
is the first time you have used the program, it will
prompt you for your phone number. ZUMFIND.EXE must be in your
path, or it will not continue. This is to prevent multiple
config files. After this question is answered, you may choose
between reconfiguring the program(your number), proceeding
to find rates, or quitting.
FINDING RATES
You will be prompted for a list of numbers that
you plan to call. Enter each prefix followed by the enter
key. When you have entered all of the prefixes, press enter
on a blank line. The rates for the numbers you entered will
be displayed with their respective data. After the data is
displayed, you may either continue, print the data, or quit
to the main menu.
NOTE: The data is presented in the opposite order from
which it was entered.
ZUMSORT
New for version 1.10 is a program named ZUMSORT. This
will read a specified file of numbers and generate a report sorting
them by zone. When run with no command line parameters, you
will be prompted for the name and path of the file you wish to
be read. Next you will be asked if it is a standard file. My
definition of a standard file is one which does not enclose
the area code with parenthesis. I chose this as the
"standard" since all but one of the files I used did not
include parenthesis. An example of a standard file is:
714-636-2667 The Kandy Shack BBS
A non-standard file is:
(714)-636-2667 The Kandy Shack BBS
The file must be in one format or the other and spaces
are important. Since the ZUMSORT searches for the 714 area code
first a file like this:
714 - 636 - 2667 The Kandy Shack BBS
OR
714 636-2667 The Kandy Shack BBS
Would result in zero numbers being found. I haven't
really seen anything like that, it's just a warning.
After the information is displayed, you will be asked if
you would like to print this information. If your answer is
yes, the data will be sent to the printer.
COMPATIBILITY
ZUMSORT has been tested with "THELIST", Darwin's BBS
list(USBBSxx.ZIP), and SOCALxxx.ZIP. There are a few quirks
with the SOCAL series of lists(extra linefeeds and tabs), but I
could not figure out a way to deal with them properly. The only
adverse result is extra lines in the report(s). SOCAL lists are
also the only "non-standard" list I have tested. If anyone
finds any compatibility problems, please let me know.
/F PARAMETER
The /f parameter stands for file. If included on the
command line, ZUMSORT will create a file named "ZUMFIND.RPT"
which will appear exactly like the information presented on the
screen. This file is created in the current directory.
NEW ZONES
Effective June 1, 1991 all telephone calls which were
previously in Zone 2 will be considered local calls. Instead of
refering to these calls as local or Zone 2, they are addressed as
"Local(Old Zone 2) Call". This will allow you to see just how
much your local calling area has expanded.
818 & 213 COVERAGE
Since many local areas include numbers within the 213 &
818 area code, I have added coverage. If 213 or 818 is entered as a
prefix, the data show will be different than the normal data.
This screen will show only local calls for the area code entered.
For most areas I do not have this information yet, so any help
in gather the numbers is appreciated.
AREAS COVERED
If your prefix is included in the list below, you can use this
program:

DISCLAIMER
Since I'm human I make no claim to the accuracy of
this is information. I'm not responsible for any damage
or mishaps based on this program or any or the data
presented by the program. In fact some the amounts will
be too high because of rounding errors.
REGISTRATION
Originally this program was free with the exception that I
encouraged the user to either give blood, or donate time/money
to a local Boy Scout troop. Recently the U.C. Regents have
decided to raise tuition by 40% to recover budget cuts. Since
I pay for most of my fees myself, money is becoming very tight.
Therefore I have decided to request a $5 one time registration fee.
I also feel that ZUMFIND(and ZUMSORT) have evolved into "real"
programs justifying the minor registration fee. Registering
will allow you unlimited free upgrades for one year. Please
send all checks to the address below.

History
NEW FOR VERSION .91 "Rough as sandpaper"
-The name of the city for the destination is listed with
the rates.
-Elimination of the data file. All data is located within
the program.
-Quicker operation because of internalization of data and
improvement of calculation techniques.
-Many more areas are covered. The data has increased nearly
ten-fold.
NEW FOR VERSION 1.00 "Wow this thing actually works!"
Thank you to Bill Fisher for providing me with most of
the data. Also a thank you goes to Jay Heyl for sharing
his source code with me.
-Use of command line parameters. If you only need to check
one number, you can type:
ZUMFIND <your number> <Number you are calling>
-Elimination of the need to end the list of numbers with a
0(Thanks Bill)
-The name portion of the configuration has been removed.
If you happen to run ZUMFIND from a different directory
than it is in it will not find the configuration file. If
this is the case, you only have to re-enter your number
instead of your name and number.
NEW FOR VERSION 1.10 "Hey, this almost looks like a real
program!"
-Improvement of command line parameters. To check a
number when a configuration file exists, type:
ZUMFIND <prefix>
-ZUMFIND now returns to DOS with an ERRORLEVEL equal to
that of the zone as follows:
ERRORLEVEL Zone
────────── ────
0 Local
2 Zone 2
3 Zone 3
4 Toll Call
100 Used to check more than
one number
-1 ERROR!
This was implemented to make it usable within batch
files.
-Fixed the problem with duplicate configuration files.
The program would search the current directory for a
config file. If it did not find one, it created one.
As a result config files were everywhere! To solve
this, ZUMFIND.EXE MUST BE IN YOUR PATH.
-Fixed the first real bug of the program. The
assignment of the city names was incorrect for a few
cities. This did not affect the rates or zones.
-Changed the quit option when displaying the data. Now
the program always returns to the main menu.(Thanks Ron)
-The biggy! Added a separate program(ZUMSORT) to read a
list of numbers (Darwin's BBS List, So. Cal, The List)
and sort them by zone.
NEW FOR VERSION 1.20 "Uhh?"
Thank you to Marshal Pearlman(did I say that?)
for spotting one of the bugs.
-Fixed two itty-bitty bugs(does anyone admit to big
bugs?)
NEW FOR VERSION 1.30 Limited Release
Thank you to Steve King for his efforts in the Persian
Gulf. Also "thank you's" goto Ron Martin, Roger
Kearney, Don Gladden, and Steve King for providing me
with their zone changes.
-Made the necessary changes to support the 6/1/1991
change by the phone company.
-Added some destination numbers that GTE forgot to tell
me about!
-Updated the documentation!
-Added 213 local call support
NEW FOR VERSION 1.31 "Let's keep it solid!"
-Added more 213 numbers
-I screwed up the data, then fixed it
-Fixed minor problems in the data(only affects V1.3)
NEW FOR VERSION 1.32 "Oops!"
-Fixed bug with ZUMSORT
-ZUMFIND is unchanged
NEW FOR VERSION 1.33 "It keeps growing, and growing, and
growing.."
-Added Ontario
-Thanks to Sabbir Bhatia for supplying the info.
NEW FOR VERSION 1.34 "Sorry"
-Fixed error in information for 951 prefix only.
-added info for Diamond Bar(Thanks to Wes Hackbarth)
-added limited support for 818 area code
NEW FOR VERSION 1.35
